Local resource spotlight: Perinatal support for busy parents

 

 

There are so many wonderful providers out there that are making holistic care more accessible than ever before.

 

But we know that it can be overwhelming to find a reliable recommendation. So every now and again, we will be featuring a local gem--our most trustworthy, competent, and warm local providers so you don't have to do tons of yelp research.

 

So without further ado... we give you three east bay providers of prenatal and postpartum services (doula, yoga, and lactation support).

Elika Aird of Blissful Bodies Yoga, Registered Yoga Teacher, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, Birth/Postpartum Doula Offering In-home services and small group classes.

 

 

 

For the past 10 years I have worked with pregnant women and new moms, offering private and group yoga sessions, as well as birth doula services and birth education classes.

 

Throughout my experience working with the perinatal community, I have found there is a greater need for more therapeutic offerings, and am so grateful to have supported numerous families on the journey from pregnancy to parenthood, finding more compassion and love no matter what the circumstances.

 

In pregnancy, I offer private yoga sessions that support the specific needs of the mother/couple to create more balance, healing any traumas or fears that might arise. These sessions generally include active poses for strengthening the body, along with Restorative yoga and meditation to calm and ground the mind. In the case of birth trauma, a Healing Your Birth session could be beneficial, which includes visualizations, Reiki healing, journaling and aromatherapy. 

 

Couples or small groups are also invited to dive deeper into any combination of these services and to connect with one another in a Daylong Prenatal Retreat as part of my Mama Luz Support Group offerings. 

 

Im also offer Postpartum Doula services, to assure that moms and babies are resting, being thoroughly nourished physically and emotionally, while offering support with breastfeeding and yoga/massage to reduce stress and promote healing.

Annemaria Rajala is a Registered Yoga Teacher for prenatal and postpartum yoga classes (E-RYT 500, RPYT, YACEP).

 

 

Annemaria teaches weekly classes and leads workshops at several Bay Area Studios and is a guest lecturer for Namaste teacher trainings in Pre and Postnatal yoga. She is known for her grounded and energetic classes. Each class invites you to explore your edge mindfully and cultivate a meaningful dialogue with your body. Annemaria is a mother to a lively little boy and deeply passionate about supporting women through the journey of pregnancy and early motherhood. 

 

 

I have been teaching yoga and movement for over a decade.  In recent years I shifted my focus to helping women prepare themselves for birth and repair themselves afterward.  Pregnancy, birthing and early motherhood is an incredibly transformational time of life.  

 

My classes and workshop offerings are a place where you can prepare and care for your body, while also being in community with other women (and sometimes partners as well). I find this community support to be incredibly impactful on the wellbeing of both body and mind.

 

The sharing of resources, offering tips for day-to-day living, and hearing honest recounts of others experiences will help remind you that you are not alone.

 

In the yoga community I think we are doing a good job of providing programming for preparing for birth and labor, but we could be doing more to provide support and programming for mamas after babies arrive. This is where I’m focusing my efforts today.

 

The mom and baby classes I teach have a robust baby holder program so the practices can be mama focused and babies have other loving pairs of hands to hold them when needed.

 

I teach a 6-Week series on gaining a functioning core after birth that has video practices for daily at-home support (and for the days making it to class is not in the cards).

 

The series offers a systematic approach that can be taken at a individual pace and can provide a good stepping stone to other exercise.

 

At regular intervals I also teach a 2h Mama Practice that focuses on the common spots in our momma bodies and provides the rare opportunity to dedicate a whole two hours to self care.

Julie Anne Stathis is a Birth/Postpartum Doula.

 

 

Julie Anne has been working with moms and babies since 2000. Attending Midwifery School in Maine, where she got certified as a birth and postpartum doula, Julie Anne had the wonderful opportunity to support women and their families during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

 

Julie Anne weaves in her Yoga training into her doula practice and helps to create a calm space for mothers to labor and deliver their babies while helping them focus on their breath. Supporting a woman during labor and delivery is a great opportunity to help women feel empowered. While helping families postpartum is also a loving way to help ease into the new role of parenthood (it’s always a new role, even if it’s not the first baby!).

 

Postpartum can add a whole new layer of emotions, exhaustion and stress. Having help with the newborn and around the house can be priceless for a new mom. Julie Anne has a way to make families feel supported, cared for, and loved.
