Do I have PTSD?

You have probably heard the terms "PTSD" and "traumatized" used so frequently and nonchalantly these days, that it is hard to know if these terms actually applies to you.

So let’s get technical for a minute.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms of PTSD include four major symptom areas.

1. Reliving the event. Bad memories of the traumatic event can come back unexpectedly. You may experience the same fear and horror you did when the actual event took place. It may even feel like you are reliving the even itself. This is called a flashback. Sometimes there is a trigger-- a sound or sight that causes you to relive the event.

2. Avoiding situations that remind you of the event. You may try to avoid situations or people that trigger memories of the traumatic event. You may even avoid talking or thinking about the event all together.

3. Feeling keyed up. You may be or feel on alert and on the lookout for danger. This is known as increased emotional arousal. It can cause you to:

  • Suddenly become angry or irritable.

  • Have a hard time sleeping.

  • Have trouble concentrating.

  • Have reckless behavior or to think about hurting yourself.

  • Fear for your safety and always feel on guard.

  • Be very startled when someone surprises you.

4. Experiencing mood changes.

  • Physical symptoms for no reason you can think of (called somatic complaints).

  • Difficulty controlling your emotions.

  • Problems with family or friends.

  • Impulsive or self-destructive behavior.

  • Changed beliefs or changed personality traits.

This is a list of symptoms mental health providers will be using to evaluate whether or not you meet a diagnosis of PTSD.

But now lets get personal for a minute.

Because most of the time, most people don’t fit in boxes. Your therapist at Oasis will be interested in the answers to these questions:

Are feeling numb, sad, stressed, or taking on destructive patterns in your thinking and behavior? How have your relationships with yourself and others changed after a hard event? Do you feel safe? Do you feel like your old self?

To us, these questions get at the heart of whether you have PTSD, and its impact on your life.
