How mindfulness can help you

Mindfulness, as defined by John Kabat-Zinn, is “learning to pay attention, without judgment, to your present moment experience.”

Through mindfulness practices and techniques you can learn to let go of expectations for the future and regrets about the past, and focus on accepting the present moment.

There are many paths in to practicing mindfulness—through seated meditation, mindful movement (ie. yoga, qigong, tai chi), or even just tuning in to your bodily sensations in response to the moment you are in when commuting to work or taking a shower.

It’s the practice of tuning into your experience right now, without judging it, rather than distracting yourself or tuning out.

Mindfulness practices like yoga, meditation, and martial arts, have become so popular in the West in the recent past that you might find everyone recommended them to you.

But why all the fuss?

Well, because scientific research has a lot of great things to say about the effects of mindfulness.

There is overwhelming empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of mindfulness as an intervention for a variety of medical and mental disorders, such as, depression,

Chronic pain, anxiety and mood disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, just to name a few.

Beyond the wide range of clinical diagnoses that have been studied in conjunction with a mindfulness based intervention, many researchers have explored the impact of mindfulness on daily living functions, for you and me, like sleep, moodiness, attention, and overall wellbeing.

The studies have shown that sleep is better, mood is improved, it is easier to make decisions, and that improvements are seen in overall physical and mental well-being.
